While You Wait

While I'm recuperating, I thought I'd show you some photos from our buying trip up in Door County. We accidentally happened upon this amazing warehouse-style shop.
They had piles and piles of vintage metal pieces. I heart this crucifix a whole bunch but it was more than slightly out of my price range.

Rows and rows of stained glass windows

French house numbers

Vintage couture
And a mermaid to keep watch over it all.
Oh, and you have to see this sweet thing that was in one of our neighbors yards...
A darling old childs bicycle merry-go-round. I want one - even though my kids would break it in 5 minutes flat.

I'm taking it slow for a few days yet. Thank you for your prayers and sweet words.
If you're waiting on an order, we should have everything shipped out by Monday. I apologize for the wait and thank you ever so much for your patience.
Have a beautiful weekend!

By Invitation Only

You'd think that by time I got to 500 posts, I'd be more eloquent... more versed on topics of interest... that I'd be closer to reaching those 1000 blessings! You might even think that my timing would be better, but truly I didn't even know this would be my 500th post until last night. So I thought I'd do something fun... You know my mom, Shabby Shoppe, really isn't into computers (I do her FFM posts for her and handle her email) and she's been dying to see all the pictures from Marburger. Remember, 200 photos (or something like that). Well, I put all the photos into a magazine for her (one of the benefits of having a magazine, right?!). Made the pictures nice and clear for her... Fun for her to show to my aunts, etc. --Ok, so since it's my 500th post all of a sudden...=) I fancied up the magazine real quick and made a "Special Reserved Issue" of PORCH available for my blog friends only, to celebrate 500 posts.

It's 60 pages of all photos - no text! All Round Top!! You have been some of the sweetest friends I've known! Friends to laugh, cry & pray with. I couldn't take you all with me to Round Top (wouldn't THAT have been fun?!!) but I'd love to share some of the flea marketing scenery with you! The cost is $12 (I really, really wish I could send you each a free copy!) - That's the actual printing cost - just so you know that I'm not making a profit =) It's available by invitation only so if you would like to purchase a copy please contact me (countingyourblessings@gmail.com ) with your email address and I will be more than thrilled to direct you to the site! Believe me, it's a perfectly scrumptious mate on a cool Autumn night!

There IS such a Place

After years of diligently searching, I finally found it!

I was nearly quivering as we drove up to the tents.

Too bad I didn't get there on Friday - I'll bet it was loaded!

I didn't actually buy much, butI took lots of photos! So now we have four new groups of free banners...

Rustic,

Kitsch,

Sparkly and

Hello Dolly.

I'm certain that when we get to Garage Sale Heaven, God will have WAY more treasures waiting for us than second day leftovers! Store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Mutt & Jeff

There they are... my little Mutt & Jeff (Latte & Sugar)

And the store has a new mascot! Stella is the star of La Di Da these days. She was born missing one paw. Can you imagine that the vet suggested having her put to sleep?!!

Here's a few pics of the store... sorry about the cell phone quality.

If you're in the area, stop in and say hi to Stella at La Di Da, 1416 N. Main St. (815-962-1234).

Ambiance

We're busy changing our decor from Christmas to a mix of Winter off-whites and Valentine romance. In the meantime, here's a wonderful little shoppe that I was in last weekend.
(click photo to enlarge if you'd like) Vintage Faire is set in the little town of Barrington, IL. Historic buildings that have been converted into stores. I bought an assortment of ribbons with french sayings on them and a cool stamp set.

I'd love to put together a Lovely Destinations link for all of us to use when we're traveling. Where are your favorite romantic shopping spots?

Stranded

After browsing all the local shops on Front Street and finding gifts for each of the loved ones back home, we decided to spend the last day of our honeymoon taking a day trip to a neighboring island. Truth be told, my head was still spinning over the short courtship and whirlwind wedding. I so wanted a real wedding (eloped at 8 months pregnant the first time) and Steve was happy to oblige (it's his first marriage afterall). He insisted on a honeymoon (why shouldn't he?) but I was worried about spending so much money (as a single mom of two I never had a dime).
Even though I was certain he was the one, I'm not usually good at changes so it was out of character for me to make such a life change in this short period of time. Engaged after one date and married within months. If you're wondering how I got to a place emotionally that I was ready to marry again... well, that's another story. I was thrilled, overflowing with joy! It was right!! But it was fast. A day of relaxing on the boat and strolling the beach was probably what I needed before going back to reality.

I'd never been on a boat before except to water ski on the Lake near home, which I wasn't very good at and since I didn't enjoy water up the nose and various other places, I hadn't water skied much either. This was a small boat with about 5 or 6 rows of bench seats, a canopy to block the sun and a loud motor in the back. We left the dock and the breeze felt good because it so steamy hot and it was still early morning. I was sunburned (redhead!) from the previous afternoon at the pool and hours of shopping outdoors. It was uncomfortably hot. After awhile, I looked around and didn't see any land except the land that we'd pulled away from. Something didn't seem right, I could feel it in my stomach. Aside from the driver there was only one other "employee". When she was available, I asked her, "How far away is the island?" "It's going to take about an hour... Um... Are you ok? Do you feel sick?" She told Steve and I to move to the back where there would be more fresh air. I didn't think I was sick. I just didn't realize the island was so far away. I was panic stricken.

I have no idea what happened in between that moment and stepping on shore. You would think that being off the water the "seasickness" would cease but no. In fact, I wasn't really even sick on the boat from what I was told. I just froze up like I was in shock or something but once on land, I could definitely feel my stomach turning. Actually, everything was turning. I stood rather wobbly on the pier, leaning against a slat-board fence while Steve talked to the boat employees. They pointed up the mountainous hill beyond the beach. "She can't get back on that boat!" I heard Steve say, nearly yelling. He turned and took me by the waist, leading me to the beach. I couldn't even think straight. When he asked me if I wanted to sit down, I didn't know how to answer.

The island was slightly (very slightly) inhabited. There was a bar of sorts just off the beach so we found a seat. The place was empty. The barkeeper came over and sat with us for a while. She kept shoving lemon halves at me, making me sniff them. Steve kept getting up to use the phone. I remember being surprised that there was a phone! Apparently, there were a scarce few on the entire island. We sat there for hours. I wasn't throwing up even though everything was spinning. I couldn't process things very well. After a good long time, and I didn't really understand how, the lemons were helping and my head was starting to clear. A tiny little car with an unusual looking driver appeared and took us through winding, bumpy "streets", up (way up) the hill and away from the other passengers from the boat.

Still feeling very confused, Steve held my hand and pulled me out of the midget car. We were in a little market area. "Up windward side... Around that way", a lady was saying to Steve. Walking and walking and it was so hot! Booby Hill the sign read and they had a phone. They took me to a little room with a mattress on the floor. I think I fell asleep.

When I opened my eyes, I had no idea how long I'd been there or if I'd been sleeping BUT I wasn't in a fog anymore! I was a bit woozy but pretty much back to myself. Steve was laying beside me, leaned up on his elbow watching me. I asked him what time it was. "Don't worry about it. Just rest." He said. "But we'll miss our boat. We need to start heading back to the beach." He shushed me and said, "I've taken care of it. Do you feel better?" "I must. I'm hungry", I said trying to smile. "When you're ready, we'll go eat."

I grabbed all our stuff and opened the door to the room... to be met with blue sky and the tops of palm trees. In every direction all I could see was ocean but it was way, way below us. It was breathtaking. I stood for a moment taking it all in, wondering how we got to this place. "I have to take a picture!" I said. Steve took the camera and walked down to a clearing, away from the tree tops. He turned around and snapped a picture of me - silly man.

On our walk to find something to eat he explained that the boat had left and that he was able charter a small plane to pick us up but the pilot was not available until later tomorrow. "But we're supposed to flying back home tomorrow!" I said. "I changed all the flights and I talked to your dad. The boys are fine. Your parents said they can stay as long as we need. Everyone just wants to make sure that you're ok so we'll have to call home again later to let them know."
It was one of those life changing moments. After all the years of struggle, I stood there in that moment, squinting from the late afternoon sun and I knew this: The man who just days ago promised to take care of me, really did!
...So we were staying the night on the island. Thankfully, that little room with a mattress on the floor was a darling one room cottage. There weren't any screens on the windows and it felt like a shed. The outdoor shower was freezing bags of water with a fast drip. There wasn't really much civilization around and the bugs were unusually loud. But when would I ever again be able to spend my honeymoon stranded on a island?!
(p.s. Oh yeah, years later I was diagnosed with a condition that causes sudden vertigo. LOL!)

The House That History Built

Mom writes: March Winds blew Sandy and Kay to several interesting places on March 1st. We began the morning by going to Chris' Antiques - located in the former "Bills Grocery Store". Wow! This was almost a living memory of our childhood as we roamed through Phyllis's bedroom (mom's best friend when she was a little girl), Aunt Audrey's kitchen & Bill's store. Memories of days gone by permeated the air. The shop is displayed in a wonderful way and we not only felt like we were visiting Bill's grocery and Phyllis' playroom, we almost could picture Aunt Audrey playing solitare at the dinning room table...

Free 45's (records) with the weekly purchase of a Kellogs product at Bill's Grocery. Mom's account of her day with my Aunt Sandy isn't dated but after lunch that day they went to the Ben Franklin to buy material.

I'm sorting by season as I go through all the kazillion magazines.

Look what I found in the midst of it all! "Good Housekeepings" Victoria - Premier Issue! Be still my heart. I can't wait to absorb every single page!

A little peek at what I'm adding to ebay tonight - in celebration of our festival of paper this week

How about a paper giveaway? I love the elegant leaf pattern on these plates and napkins. Kinda looks anthropologie-ish, don't you think? But, no, it's Wal-mart =) ...just add a comment on today's post and I'll let the random number picker select someone on Friday.

p.s. Is anyone else excited about Tuesdays just because House is on?! Hey lookitthat, he has a book =) Finally...a way to work Hugh Laurie into my victorian shab plot!!

Paperie

I have a bizarre affinity for paper. All forms of paper. (Ok, not toilet paper... well, I guess I'd be hard pressed to say that I can do without it so yes, toilet paper too.) I've always loved old papers, new papers, sleek papers, colorful papers and so on. I used to pretend to be an author when I was little. Conveniently, I was also a magazine editor, a teacher, a student, an artist, a love letter writer... I don't know if it's the paper or the words or the pictures but I'm hooked!

We were having our weekly Sunday lunch at my parent's house yesterday and we were discussing this very topic. I mentioned my "inspiration boxes" and my mom said, "Oh, don't you remember all those magazines and clippings I have in the basement?" I have to admit that I've secretly wanted to get my hands on some of those old magazines but I recalled the mess in my dinning room right now from my escapade of exploring my own stash the other day. I dared not ask mom for a peek at them or she might point her finger toward her attic and tell me to get up there directly and drag down all my high school journals, yearbooks and "oh, I can't throw that out" items!

I knew to keep myself quiet or the afternoon could go south =) and my plans to visit the 6000 square foot mansion open house sometime between 2:00 and 4:00 would surely be foiled! As I was pondering those thoughts I realized she had still been talking (oops). "When Aunt Lou and Aunt Sandy and Gram and I get together once a month, we take turns reading a little story that we've written". HUH?? Now, I know about the once a month gatherings. I've been trying to get into this secret society for years!! Mom and her sisters (and gram) find the most quaint places to have lunch and they always bring home unique finds from their shopping soirees. But these stories? "Why don't you go grab some of those old Victoria magazines downstairs and I'll get my Sister's Book." There was even a name for it! How did I not know about this?

What she brought out touched my heart so! Pocket folders full of stories, some typed and some handwritten by my grandmother and her three offspring. And photo albums bulging with snapshots of mom's childhood and that wonderful orchard! (That's gram and gramps in the picture.) And... - now we know from where my problem stems -... tons of old magazine clippings!

So as I browse this week through the festival of papers mom has lent to me, I will be sharing some of her stories, my stories, and all sorts of puffery! And since this seems the perfect week to gather together sweet little things into inspiration boxes, I'd like to invite you to take an excursion into your own stash of bits-n-bobs; retrieve the lovliness that you cleave to... and really cleave to it. What of sending a handmade Christmas card to your sis using some of those precious pretty articles? Or creating a garland of eye candy calling cards? Or... a simple afternoon sifting...remembering...dreaming.

And to make the puttery even more inviting, there is someone who will hand bind a book (or several in my case) for all our beloved paper secrets. Made By One Girl has a book of every size. She even has accordian file folders that slip neatly into the bookcase. Her site is in our Lovely Award spot this week.
Go download her catalog, bind it with ribbon, grab a cup of soup and take your lunch while flipping the pages. You'll love her little handwritten notes. I'll bet they resemble some chicken scratch in your inspiration stash.

A Quick Peek...

This is it - the item that had me checking my debit account from the library. It's a hand painted old window pane. I haven't decided how it looks better, on the window or on the wall.

And here is just a peek at some of the architecture that I mentioned.

Sometimes when hubby and I visit Galena we come home having spent way beyond what we had saved for the trip. I'm really proud of us this year! We only made a few purchases. Of course, they were expensive purchases but we stayed pretty well within our limit. For example, I did not buy this bench (though I may have had it not already been sold, lol).

But I did buy this arbor. Two old doors... and they are hard to see in the photo but there's old metal cornices too. It was actually cheaper than the bench. The arbor was $175 and the bench was $250. You can take a look at some of Hilltop's other items here.

I have soooo many pictures of the great shops, the Country Fair and the beautiful area but I need a little time to go through it all. I did, however, take a few pictures specifically for a few of you.

Penny, you would've swooned over this french provencial spot, Vignettes!

Michelle, thought you might like these but don't kill me, I don't remember what store they were in. You can probably make them anyways =)

The kids are off school today so we're heading out to the apple orchard. I'll leave you with this snapshot from my walk to the library...

We're about 4 stories above the main shopping area. Just over that fence...
Layers of secluded terraces and courtyards. More later... Have a wonderful Monday.

Country Fair Shopping

We must have climbed 4-5 flights of limestone stairs... At each interveral pausing a moment to look over the rail at the secluded courtyards below. Reaching the top, we were still several blocks away... walking into the sun. But there was a slight breeze, breathtaking views, gingerbread cottages with bicycles parked out front, ivy dangling from the bricks... and the promise of air-conditioned internet use at the end of the walk. That is how I came to be in this 1907 library surrounded by chandeliers, solid oak shelves and the wonderful smell of old books. And why am I in the library while on a mini-vacation alone with my husband? Apart from the air-conditioning... I have to check the balance in my debit account. I found the coolest thing! I can't wait to show you!!! But first, I have to go pay for it... (I know I've shown you this photo before but I can't upload any pictures until I get home. However, it reminds me of all the old architecture here).
