Picket Fences

It was sunny and in the high 60's yesterday! Of course, I got a hankering for planting. Most of you know that where green thumbs are involved, I'm a killer not a grower. My retired neighbor sneaks over all Summer and does what he can to revive the plant cemetary in my yard. He thinks I don't notice but I do - and I like it =) so I'm not going to blow his cover! (Every Spring I beg the city to let me take down this Farmer's Market sign. It's on the side of our old church building and there's not a farmer's market that meets there anymore. Every Spring they tell me that a private party hand painted and donated it and unless I'm going to replace it, I can't have it. I'm going to have to do some brainstorming!!)

Mom collects old picket (don't ask Dad why or you'll likely get more conversation than you bargained for) so yesterday I pulled some chippy, peeling sections out of her stash and consulted neighbor Bob about creeping, flowering vines for the front yard.

We've decided that it's time to get planting (well, I plant - He nurtures) and if it's time to plant, it's time to start working on the back porch!! Can't wait to get out the curtains and cushions and ice cream chairs!!

So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.

  1. I just came across your blog and I love it! Had to laugh about asking to take down that sign. I used to walk by this old iron headboard leaning against someone's house. One time the homeowners were finally outside and I got up the nerve to ask about the headboard. "Sure you can have it." they said. It never hurts to ask!

  2. Oh the porch. I'm working on mine too.

I'd be hand painting myself another sign with a spare board and permanent magic marker to replace that beautiful farmer's market sign, and tell the city you're ready to deal, Honey!

  4. We haven't had much of a spring here in NY as yet. I can't wait for outside table and chair time too!

I love old picket fence too! That will look so pretty with vines and maybe some Morning Glories grwoing through it?

I tagged you for a book tag -- rules on my blog. Please participate only if you want to, and have the time. I'm never offended if someone declines a tag.

  7. I am wondering if your neighbor would know what kind of vines or plants would do well in a yard where when it rains it stands in water threrforth taking all the nutrients out of the soul. I live in southern Kentucky and love all kinds of flowers and plants. I would love to be able to grow some to attract butterflies and birds. Thanks for listening to me rant....Smiles...Mary

  11. I would like to own just one old picket fence someday. I kick myself for not being able to salvage the old gate from my husbands grandmother's old home when it was torn down. (she lived to be 103 btw). The problem was that we were visiting and had no means of getting it back home. Someday!
    God bless!
