There's something very touching about seeing my husbands Bible laying open...
This was my "GodSpeaks" devotional for today:
Basis For Our Blessings
"Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him." - 1 Corinthians 2:9 NKJV
The proceeding verse is one of the most wonderful verses in the entire Bible. It describes the unfathomable blessings of God. However, the most wonderful part of this verse is not in the blessings themselves but in the basis for these blessings. God's Word says that His blessings are for those who love Him. This means that all of the blessings that we receive and enjoy in Christ are based on our love-relationship with Him.
How freeing to know that love is the basis for our blessings! God isn't looking to bless us in return for some amazing act or accomplishment. He is looking for us to love Him more than anything else because He always puts His love for us first. The story was told of a young girl who had just received her driver's license. As a reward, her father let her drive his car to school. Just as she was pulling into the school parking lot, a careless driver sideswiped her. She was uninjured, but her eyes filled with tears as she thought about the mess that she was now in. As she opened the glove compartment and fumbled for the insurance papers, she noticed an envelope. Inside was a letter written to her in her father's distinct handwriting, "When the time comes for you to use these papers, remember that it's you that I love . . . not the car." This is a reflection of God's heart toward us. He loves us before anything else and desires for us to put our love for Him first.
We need to continually ask God's Spirit to search our hearts and reveal where we may have strayed in putting our love for Him first. When we do so, He will be faithful to restore and revive our love for Him, which is always the basis for our blessings.
How consistently do you dwell on God's love for you?
What is the danger in loving God's blessing more than Him?
